Nicely done Alex. You've covered a wide array of topics in an efficient and entertaining manner.
Speaking of entertainment, Monday's DJT show was something else. A serious speech that dealt with subjects of significant concern for sensible people, followed by a more lighthearted delivery to supporters, was a wonderful way to kick-off the new administration. The evening activity in the Oval Office, with its rapid-fire issuance of executive orders, was amazing. Significant progress seemingly made in such a short period of time.
Hearing the breathless reaction to the latter activity, by Canadian media muppets, was tiresome and predictable. In Canada, not much seems to have been said about sleepy Joe's list of pardons - including Fauci, Cheney, Milley and many members of his own family.
The threat of sizeable tariffs on Canadian goods has spurred action by politicians that was long overdue. It will be fascinating to see what solutions are eventually negotiated. A Canadian ban on U.S. Bourbon and orange juice sounds like something from an SCTV skit.
Hard to believe that appears to be our proposed “eye for an eye." If we force Alberta to turn off the taps to them, they may never come back. It was a remarkable day of action and entertainment, and (normal) Canadians have to decide if they’ll be a patriot or a nationalist here.
As an Albertan who totally supports this province’s premier, thanks for saying this Alex! And thanks for saying it so well! Premier Smith is the only adult in the political room right now, despite what a lot of eastern media are saying. There are a lot of economists who are backing her up.
Hah, hey my pleasure Glenn. I have an Op-ed that's out to the papers right now that expands on this as well. The 'Team Canada' branding really sticks in my craw. There is no 'Team Canada,' not until we're done with the Liberals and Trudeau's legacy. Hope someone picks it up, so I can share it here.
Really enjoyed today’s pod. It is always refreshing to hear a Canadian perspective that is objective about America and President Trump!
Your comments on Doug Ford and Justin’s Team Canada plan were very interesting - the similarity of the plan to their COVID response hadn’t occurred to me and their proposed actions would break the country for sure. As a lifelong western Canadian the fact that it involves sacrificing Alberta’s oil & gas industry to avoid making sacrifices in other provinces makes me incredibly angry and would undoubtedly our national unity to the test.
Thank you for this, Carolyn! I very much share those concerns. As a reformed Ontarian presently giving it a go in the B.C. Lower Mainland, it's been incredibly frustrating to witness Queen's Park strike that similarly performative, maudlin, paternal tone. As a writer with campaign experience, I can spot the BS from a mile away, and it's indeed BS. They were striking the same chord during lockdown, after lockdown, after lockdown... and look where that led our economy, the value of our dollar, the still not wholly recovered workforce, and not to mention all those massive second-order effects...
Alberta would be feeling the overwhelming majority of the hurt, Ontario is kidding itself if they think some failed EV subsidies and Tito's vodka off the shelves at the LCBO will make as much of a dent as the province that often singlehandedly keeps our economy afloat...
An excellent, down to earth summary of everything that’s wrong with left wing administrations and a damning indictment of our current “government “ So glad that Davos is dying a long deserved death too.

Because some of the nationalists don’t appear to realize they’re on the same team as the "post-nationalists"… https://x.com/wyatt_claypool/status/1881865980286300474?s=46

Also, Schellenberger is great but so is Matt Taibbi.
He is! I subscribe to both. Highly recommend. I consider Taibbi, Shellenberger, and The Free Press to be the essential U.S. outlets on Substack.
I completely agree and subscribe to all three.
Glad you relocated to the west coast. I appreciate the work you’re doing.
That's very kind of you, makes it all worthwhile.
I appreciate the support and the conversation. Thanks for being so plugged in. Seems like you have a terrific reading list.

Very much appreciate this, Peter!
Check out this scene from Davos today. Must break Carney’s heart (or whatever is left of it). https://x.com/pmarca/status/1881811365620568167?s=46
