I find your glib brushing off of risks to boomers in this election, not well thought out at all. Many people are sold on the anti Trump rhetoric not just over 60 s. The risk in this election, to boomers, is a future rise in taxes, increasing crime, dissatisfaction regarding the purchasing power of the dollar, and yet more erosion of our “free” social safety nets. Your barely contained anger at boomers needs to be refocused to explain the risks to them personally. Most all people vote for what they see as best for them. Items such as unwarranted tax cuts, offers of “free” dental care etc eclipse their ability to think of the overall needs and interests of the country. We need to fix our immigration. Fix our military. Fix the border issue regarding the arctic. Fix the outrageous red tape around building homes and infrastructure. Carney, captured as he is by the European elite, will do none of these things and in my opinion this is exactly why he has been put forth - to keep things going in the direction they are going. Get that message through to boomers and the rest of the country.
Having said that I am not certain the Cons are the group to do that. The only consistent voice in that direction has been Max…
Hi Geoffrey, point very well taken and accepted here. While it's a hard line to walk on discussing certain trends like polling, scenes from the Carney rallies, or the houses we see going "elbows up!" and who occupies them, I can appreciate that I could do a better job as a communicator and I of course don't intend to paint with a broad brush. Having a sense of humour about these things also doesn't help my case, as I'm not going to converse in a particularly stilted or politically correct manner.
I love our conservative boomers, and don't hold anyone's partisan leaning against them, nor do I hold any resentment towards anyone for their age or success. If that comes across at times, know that it's either a) unintentional or b) it's really hard to be a thirty-something in this country right now, just as it is being a seventy-something on, say, a fixed income or retirement plan, and watching the same people who lost their minds during Covid make some of the same selfish mistakes has been very difficult.
I greatly appreciate your points and the time and care that went into your remarks, and I am in agreement.
My goodness, top 100 and this is just your sidebar project these days as you save the country! Congrats Alex.
Jodi! That is very generous. Arguably far too generous. lol.
But you are very kind. Trying my best. Happy to stand up for some wonderful people who deserve far better. Hope it helps.
Congrats on the terrific writing of late, will miss having you in Ottawa next week.
Thanks so much Alex--will miss being there too. Bet it'll be a memorable one.
Barely a boomer here
