On the anniversary of a protest unlike any other, the author wonders about the man who pushed Canadians too far, and reflects on time spent on highway overpasses and amongst the rabble in Ottawa.
Great article Alexander! I fought for my country, then stood on a bridge in Burlington ON (Liberal stronghold) with about 500 other “fringe elements” while the trucks passed, for hours, on their way to Ottawa. It was a decisive moment for me.
“Even if one takes issue with the use of colourful language — again, with apologies to Erin O’Toole — should we not be examining the conditions under which Canadians of all people would be driven to be profane?” PRECISELY.
One year ago my wife was at one of the stops as the truckers assembled, we went the 2nd weekend. We met up with people my wife met on the local TG channel the following Thursday. Soon after we headed to Ottawa, the truck loaded to the gills with donations: a generator, gas cans, bbqs, food, salt, snow shovels etc.
It took 2 hours to shelp it to the front lines but I'll never forget the weekend. It was truly something to behold as Canadians had actually risen up and showed the world that WE can be pushed too far.
Ok it's not like my pop's fighting the soviets in '56, but something I never EVER expected to see or do in my lifetime!
